Dr. Mark Taylor says that using Barti Software’s artificial intelligence (AI) tools sends patients a message that his practice, North Alabama Eye Care, in Scottsboro, Alabama, is keeping up with technology. Why is that a good thing?
“That’s what patients are looking for,” he points out. “They want doctors who are on the cutting edge of and staying up to date on technology. This, in turn, binds patients to a practice and creates referrals.” Barti offers 5 AI software tools: AI Website Builder, AI Support Agent, AI History, AI Smart Scan, and AI Scribe. All these tools are designed to help users streamline workflow and simplify administrative tasks, so they can optimize one-on-one time with patients, according to the company.

The Barti AI Website Builder allows providers to develop their own HIPAA-compliant websites.
AI Support Agent helps users navigate electronic health records and troubleshoot. The company’s AI History is a chat tool that enables providers to ask for and retrieve patient data, including exam histories and prescriptions.
AI Scribe listens, transcribes, and summarizes notes regarding anterior and posterior exams in real time. Additionally, it offers automatic translating for over 15 languages. AI Smart Scan is an automatic data-entry tool for patient ID and insurance information.
Here, Drs. Taylor, Emily Bry-ant, and Joseph Deering discuss the value of the specific Barti tools they employ: AI History, AI Smart Scan, and AI Scribe.
Patient Value
Dr. Deering, who practices at Winchester Optical, in Winchester, Massachusetts, says AI Scribe and AI History help him and his staff to be more efficient when gathering and extracting a patient’s clinical information.
“We can be more attentive when we’re with a patient,” he points out. “Patients appreciate and become loyal to doctors who face them when addressing them and take the time to answer their questions.”
Dr. Bryant, who practices in Worland, Wyoming, at Mountain West Eye Care and Med Spa, agrees with Dr. Deering: “If patients say something, they want you to hear them.” Having technology that can automatically record patients’ medical information means she can focus on listening to them without having to take notes or asking them to repeat things, she says.
Dr. Taylor says he’s convinced that 1 of the pieces of technology, in particular, has brought in patient populations that he believes were intimidated to present for eye exams due to a language barrier.
“AI Scribe, which translates patients’ concerns, puts patients who speak Spanish in my area at ease,” he points out.
Practice Value
Dr. Deering says using AI Scribe and AI Smart Scan help his staff accumulate and document information quickly and accurately. These tools “take administrative tasks and make [patient information] more available,” he explains.
Dr. Taylor points out that the Barti tools help to ensure that a patient’s record is as complete as possible.
“Especially with patients with ocular disease or glaucoma, you can get all the fine details,” he says. “You’re less prone to missing things.”
Smart Scan, Barti’s automatic data entry tool for patient ID and insurance information, helps reduce errors, says Dr. Deering. Dr. Bryant agrees, and says, “It speeds up the process” for her staff who no longer have to manually input that patient information. OM
