The word "inspiration," derived from a Latin word meaning “to breathe life into,” holds a profound significance. When you hear the term “inspiration,” what comes to mind? Perhaps a moving piece of music, a striking work of art, or a compelling book? But inspiration can also manifest in our professional lives, sparking innovative solutions to problems, motivating us to teach others, and/or encouraging us to provide the best care for our patients.
A Unique Opportunity
As optometrists, we have the unique opportunity to inspire our patients and ourselves every day. Rather than defaulting to the same treatments or prescriptions year after year, let us be proactive in seeking the best options for our patients. Inspiration is not a fleeting moment to wait for; it is something we can cultivate daily.
Reflecting on my experiences of over more than 3 decades in optometry and in my personal life, I recognize countless moments where I allowed negativity to stifle my creativity and enthusiasm. Here are some ways to ignite inspiration.

Reflect on Your Journey.
Take time to recall the moments that have filled you with joy and fulfillment. Identifying these experiences can guide you toward replicating them in your daily life and practice.
Engage with Uplifting Literature.
Choose books that inspire rather than diminish your spirit. If you encounter a book that feels discouraging, set it aside. Instead, seek out literature that resonates with you so deeply you revisit it annually, marking passages that uplift and motivate.
Connect with Nature.
Spend time outdoors—whether through walks, bike rides, or sitting in a park. Nature has a remarkable ability to rejuvenate the spirit and spark creativity.
Empower Others.
Use your knowledge to help friends and family navigate their healthcare journeys. Accompany a relative to their doctor’s appointment. Your insights can illuminate their understanding and transform their health.
Cultivate Beauty.
Consider adding a plant to your environment each week. Place it in a spot where you can appreciate its growth, whether in a sunlit room or by your kitchen sink.
Listen to Inspirational Podcasts.
Infuse your workouts with motivation by tuning in to uplifting podcasts. The combination of physical activity and positive messaging can leave you feeling energized and focused.
Curate Your Music Playlist.
Surround yourself with music that you brings joy.
Watch Uplifting Films.
Choose movies that inspire and uplift you. While some may enjoy the catharsis of sad films, I prefer those that ignite a desire to make a positive impact in the world.
The Power of Inspiration
Inspiration is crucial for our well-being and professional growth. Surround yourself with people and experiences that inspire you. As you do, watch your life—and your practice—blossom. Please share your stories of inspiration with me; together, we can celebrate the transformative power of creativity and passion in our profession. Let’s inspire one another to become the best versions of ourselves! OM
